The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Ohio State University President Gordon Gee has announced that he will be retiring effective June 1. Never one to shy from an off the cuff comment, Gee has been on the defensive during the past week for recent comments poking fun at both Notre Dame and the SEC.
Regardless of how you feel about Dr. Gee, there is no question The Ohio State University has come a long way under his tenure. Under his direction, Ohio State has grown both physically as a campus and academically as an institution. For those of us who graduated before Dr. Gee arrived, the changes are obvious.
Unfortunately, Dr. Gee’s good natured sense of humor got him into trouble one time too many. And yes, his comments over the years have often been entirely inappropriate for a person in his position.
Like Coach Tressel before him, it is sad to see an individual who has done such good things leave on such a bad note but at this point, it may be the best thing. It will be hard to find someone to fill his shoes.
